Tortoise Story 2: Blade The Disabled Tortoise Gets New Lego Wheels

Disabled Tortoise 6

This tortoise named Blade, recently made headlines for having new lego wheels, which enabled him to move better. His owner Iris Peste, took him to the vet after she noticed that he had a hard time moving around. They found out that the growth disorder weakened Blade’s limbs that’s why he couldn’t hold himself up.

As a temporary solution, Dr. Carsten Plischke, made Blade a Lego wheelchair from his son’s collection. He fitted two sets of wheels to Blade’s underside to assist him until he regained the use of his legs.

Dr. Carsten Plischke said: “For people there are walker, rollators or prostheses but for animals there are no companies that produce something like that.”

But before Blade, there was Schildi. Schildi was an abandoned tortoise found in a pretty bad shape and with a missing leg, last year. The German rescuers believed that it was probably due to an accident. They gave him a prosthetic leg, but it was hard for him to turn corners because it had two wheels.

As reported on The Local, one of his vets replaced it with a single wheel lego leg, and used surgical glue to stick a base block to Schildi’s underside. They added more blocks to get the right height, so he could move around. He still needs checkup once in a while and a tire change once a year.
